1. In your experience, when have you felt successful directly teaching ABOUT New Church concepts?

  • When I have had ample time for research and development
  • HB classroom everyday - teaching; -correspondences; IPS - order; Math - order
  • Worship (obviously); Science (obviously); When discussing literature, you can talk about judjing from externals, you can talk about choices made, why they were good or why they were bad, function of faith in your life of the lives of the characters etc.
  • Perhaps 3-4 times a year, I really get to do this: 1st week of classes, discussing order - as the language/application/underlyfoundation of math as it is with religion; later, talking about learning "facts" as a means to understanding and thence to higher thought, but this is not daily :(
  • also: in outlining expectations of charity, respect, ect. in classroom to promote sphere of learning.
  • HB - correspondences; Physical science - Newton's Laws; Five smooth stones
  • In teaching sophomore boys, I have learned that they often have little respect for their peers. It is common practice to tease and make fun of other students. I try and get the boys to show charity to each other. All boys at some point will be in small groups with each other. They must learn to work together and show charity towards each other.

2. How might the school system help you build on these strengths?

-TIME!!!

-Have students know basics of New Church Doctrines - so the "about" be built on.
-Introduction to New Church doctrines
-Mars courses

-When financially stable, it would be great to have more time to research from the writings.

-Maybe we (faculty) could do "refresher" course(s) on doctrine; ie. New Church orientation or doctrinal studies?

-Introductory course for students with no back-ground (similar to Rookie Religion) during summer - prerequisite
-MARS courses - paying for these for educators having MARS course in the summer
-Workshops for teachers on these techniques (in service)

-We nees time for our own research in the writings

3. What are some of the challenges you have faced teaching ABOUT New Church concepts?

-Application is easy, it's the R and D to get to the application that's tough

-Know what's available.
-Young teacher/new to teaching/new to New Church teachings
-Variety of student/teacher backgrounds
-Not know how much of "what" I should be teaching

-Lack of confidence that I understand a certain concept and fear of misleading students
-Sometimes there is a bit of resistance from the students, "we get religion everywhere!", but that doesn't really bother me. I think they will appreciate it later on in life.

-In mat it is difficult to bring in daily direct applications (without feeling really forced)
-Is it enough to be modelling and expecting charity, respect, courtesy, alacrity, and order in the classroom?

-Variety of background levels in students - variety of receptiveness
-New Church jargon

-In teaching math, I often have problems trying to bring religion in the classroom.

4. How might the school system support you in facing these challenges?

-Time to read, reflect and apply

-Know what's available
-A more defined curriculum for new teachers

-Time to study more
-Availability of Free-to-Teachers online religion courses

-Create a time block in school week (ie. Friday 2-3 pm) which is set aside for faculty focus on dictrine

-Mentoring young/new teachers on how to do this
-Knowing what resources are available to all teachers
